Center of Competence Finance in Zürich (CCFZ) Conference 2004

The Center of Competence Finance in Zürich (CCFZ) officially opens with a symposium on Financial Competence in the Science City Zürich Thursday, March 25, 2004 in the Aula of the University of Zürich from 17:00 - 20:00. With distinguished guests and experts from the financial sciences field, the event is aimed at providing an insight into the goals and activities of the interdisciplinary CCFZ, including a glimpse into various aspects of research conducted in risk management.

Medical Engineering: International Interdisciplinary Workshop on Flow and Motion

An international interdisciplinary workshop on flow and motion quantification by MRI in neuro and cardiovascular applications will be held in Zürich, Switzerland July 11-13, 2004.

This event is a joint effort of the Institute of Neuroradiology at the University Hospital Zürich, and the Institute for Biomedical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institue of Technology (ETH Zürich).

The workshop is meant to foster communication amongst practitioners and to facilitate education of newcomers to the closely related fields of magnetic resonance imaging, computational fluid dynamics, and clinical vascular medicine. TWO COLAB POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWS APPOINTED ASSISTANT PROFESSORS

Drs. Martin Pelikan and Assyr Abdulle, both post-doctoral fellows of the Computational laboratory (CoLab), accepted offers for assistant professorships from the University of Missouri at St. Louis and the University of Basel (Switzerland), respectively. Dr. Martin Pelikan has already begun his work at the UMSL Math and Computer Science Department. Dr. Assyr Abdulle will join the University of Basel, Department of Mathematics on October 1st. These are the first major external appointments of CoLab Fellows, a remarkable result for a lab that started its operations only 18-months ago.

The Bonizzi-Theler Chair is awarded by a Foundation of the same name whose aim is the promotion of interdisciplinary scientific efforts to support and improve human life and quality of human life. Professor Josef Jiricny, the first awardee of the Bonizzi-Theler Chair for Functional Genomics has been Professor for Molecular Cancer Research at the Medical Faculty of Zürich University since 1996. COLAB IN ETH LIFE

On April 4th, ETH Life published an article on CoLab entitled: "Eine Werkstatt für clevere Algorithmen." Computer modelling is a research tool which is indispensable in many research areas. Scientists often face similar problems. CoLab Zürich now offers an interdisciplinary platform for scientists wanting to develop new numerical methods and alogrithms.

PROTEOME INFORMATICS DEPARTMENT

MASCOT@FGCZZURICH The Proteome Informatics department of the Functional Genomics Center Zürich provides an introductory course in Turn-Key Automation of Protein Identification and Characterisation. Using newly available Mascot Server and Mascot Daemon installations, the course covers various areas of proteomics analysis of mass spectrometry data. Candidates should bring with them previous knowledge of protein identification strategies and software (for example sequest or protein prospector).

Dr. UWE SCHMOCK CALLED TO TU VIENNA

Dr. Uwe Schmock, Coordinator of the MAS Finance, will take the position of Full Professor at the Insitute for Finance and Insurance Mathematics at the Technical University of Vienna on June 1, 2003. Professor Schmock will continue to manage the MAS Finance at ETH Zürich, during a transition period of four months. STOCHASTIC TOOLS FOR GROUNDWATER MODELLING: FEEDBACK ON A COURSE HOSTED BY THE COLAB

The CoLab hosted a course on "Stochastic Tools for Groundwater Modelling" organized by Prof. Fritz Stauffer and Prof. Wolfgang Kinzelbach, IHW, ETHZ . It was addressed to environmental engineers, civil engineers, geologists, hydrologists, natural scientist and applied mathematicians engaged in the development and the use of groundwater models. Fifty students and postdoctoral researchers from all over Europe, as well as professionals from engineering offices, attended the course. Asking for their feedback after the course the following replies were offered: "I will recommend the course to colleagues", "very well prepared", "stimulating", "extremely interesting", "comprehensive approach".

CoLab: The Challenge of Complexity: Robustness Analysis with Applications to Biological and Physical Systems

At the CoLab, John Doyle and Pablo Parillo held a Workshop on the robustness of biological systems and how they can provide the foundations for a theoretical modelling framework. Applications to other multi-scale physics and chemistry problems will also be provided.
